you are not my brother, my son, my lover, my nephew, my friend, my student,
my teacher, my grandson, my dad, my great-grand father

people walk by the corner bodega,
stop
eyes wander to the spontaneous and planned tags,
to the posters, the teddy bears, the empty liquor bottles
illuminated by the light of
the candles

candles that burn brightly through the night,
keeping the thoughts tight
through a winter snow storm
through an angry bitter blizzard of police, sirens,
wails escaping the mouths of young ladies and young mothers,

a single bullet tearing through the broad rays of a 4pm daylight saving times sun
missing middle school children’s bodies, touching their souls
hitting the intended “target”

oh yes the candles burn, the light continues.

nothing can dim the brightness of the sun, of fire
even in the absence of life

and each time I pass,
another person pays their respects to this fallen soldier
a nod, a sign to the cross, a bowed head, a teary eye,
an emptiness in the heart,
not knowing even where to start
and yet they pass

I pass again…candles still so bright
illuminated in the winter light

I stop to give ceremony at that corner store

there is a new feeling in the air
one that understands the loss on the block
but we don’t even talk
pass each other with maybe a smile
and we’re still separated by at least a mile

we ask for permission from the ancestors to begin
we pray for strength and guidance
and free our hopes and fears to the universe
ask forgiveness from Mother Earth
for how we treat her children.

and the smoke from our ceremonial herbs rise,
our prayers stretching to reach the sky
and
the roots
of
our pain

To the people of Mexico:
To the people of the world:
To the Other Campaign in Mexico and the other side of the Rio Grande:
To the entire Sixth International:

Compañeros and compañeras:
Brothers and sisters:

It is now known publicly that yesterday, 29th of October 2006, Vicente Fox’s federal forces attacked the people of Oaxaca and its most legitimate representative, the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO).

Today, the federal troops have assassinated at least 3 people, among them a minor, leaving dozens of wounded, including many women from Oaxaca. Dozens of detainees were illegally transported to military prisons. All this comes in addition to the existing total of deaths, detainees and missing persons since the beginning of the mobilization demanding that Ulises Ruiz step down as Oaxaca’s governor.

The sole objective of the federal attack is to maintain Ulises Ruiz in power and to destroy the popular grassroots organization of the people of Oaxaca.

Oaxaca’s people are resisting. Not one single honest person can remain quiet and unmoved while the entire society, of which the majority are indigenous, is murdered, beaten and jailed.

We, the Zapatistas, will not be silent; we will mobilize to support our brothers, sisters and comrades in Oaxaca.

The EZLN’s Sixth Commission has already consulted the Zapatista leadership and the following has been decided:

First: During whole day of November 1, 2006, the major and minor roads that cross Zapatistas territories in the southwestern state of Chiapas will be closed.

Consequently, we ask that everyone avoid traveling by these roads in Chiapas on this day and that one make the necessary arrangements in order to do so.

Second: through the Sixth Commission, the EZLN has begun making contact and consulting other political and social organizations, groups, collectives and individuals in the Other Campaign, in order to coordinate joint solidarity actions across Mexico, leading to a nationwide shut-down on the 20th of November, 2006.

Third: the EZLN calls out to the Other Campaign in Mexico and north of the Rio Grande, so that these November 1st mobilizations happen wherever possible, completely, partially, at intervals or symbolically shutting down the major artery roads, streets, toll booths, stations, airports and commercial media.

Fourth: The central message that the Zapatistas send and will continue sending is that the people of Oaxaca are not alone: They are not alone!

Immediate withdrawal of the occupying federal forces from Oaxaca!

Immediate and unconditional freedom for all detainees!

Cancel all arrest warrants!

Punish the murderers!

soo ive been doing a lot of reading on the middle east - from basic history to geography to 9th-10th century erotic islamic poetry to the philosophy of suicide bombings. cuz of the most recent invasion on lebonese soil, ive been into reading bout the origins and philosophies of hizbu'llah. hizbu'llah sees the world split - the mundo of the oppressors (mustakbirin) and the mundo of the oppressed (mustad'afin). hizbu'llah says u know when ur oppressed cuz:
* ur mind is FREE, LIBERATED
* u resist the west - the us especially
* ur in danger for ur beliefs
when u are awake, when u can see, when u can hear, when u don't believe bullshit, when u stop the drone of ur everyday life of walking around like a brainwashed zombie.

but anyhow...hizbu'llah is down for international soldiary with other OPPRESSED PEOPLES. the book im readin talks bout hizbu'llah being down especially with:

* fidel castro
* nelson mandela
* the ira
* and the book didnt say, but im sure that hizbu'llah is down with mi inspiracion - los zapatistas

hizbu'llah is NOT down with violence. they are into SELF-PRESERVATION and SELF-DEFENSE. they will and have armed themselves when they need to DEFEND their people (sounds kinda like the black panthers, verdad?).

interesting how shit gets so twisted with our western, "democratic and free" media...
and while im walkin down that camino - let's talk about one other term that is misrepresented, manipulated, and misunderstood by our "democratic and free" media...
jihad - western media says "holy war", but this book says "the exertion or effort of following the path of Allah". sooo taking care of another human being is jihad, willpower is jihad, resistance to temptation is jihad, childbirth is considered jihad - que beautiful no?
